Flat Car Overhaul pt 1: So, I guess we're overhauling the 105 now...
I brought our flat car number 105 in the shop for a routine repair. While in the shop, I noticed enough surface rust that I really wanted to do a frame-off restoration. Something I resisted for quite some time while fixing all the little things that needed attention. This is our toughest car. It handles the heaviest loads. It gets in the worst derailments. It has lived outside in the elements for over a decade with a minimal amount of maintenance. So, now I guess it's time to give this old workhorse some love. I didn't intend to pull it apart this much, but now I'm into it up to my neck.
In this video, we fix all the little things that are either falling off or are bent out of shape. We give the couplers a little cleaning. Then, we take it right down to the frame.
Next time, we'll sandblast the frame and maybe get it in primer.

Finger Lakes Live Steamers 55th Anniversary Meet
Переглядів 6 тис.14 годин тому
Today, we're on the road again, in the Finger Lakes region of western New York, for the Finger Lakes Live Steamers 55th anniversary meet. This club has 7-1/4" gauge and 4-3/4" gauge tracks, and the turnout was decent for both. Come along as we ride around the track, watch train after train go by, then get some night running in and even have time for some shenanigans. fingerlakeslivesteamers.org...

Tropical Storm Debby Cleanup: Clearing a Fallen Tree at Mill Brook Railroad

Tropical Storm Debby came through and only knocked down one tree here at the Mill Brook Railroad. Watch the process of cutting it up and loading it on the train, destined for the burn pile. Don't forget to subscribe for more updates and behind-the-scenes looks at our railway ad...

Weed Whacking on Rails: Track Maintenance from a Moving Train!

Today, we're tackling vegetation control in a unique way by running the line trimmer up and down the hill from the train! I've received countless requests to weed whack from the train, and although I don't normally do it this way, I couldn't resist giving it a shot. It may not be the most efficient method for trimming weeds, but it's certainly the most requested! Normally, I sweep the trimming ...

This is awesome!!! I’ve been doing the same this year with firewood for the shop stove. You’ve got a great setup. I’ve got a gas splitter, but it sure makes sense to move splits only once, and doesn’t get any more direct than by rail! 👏🏻

Look at a product called POR-15. It is the best rust encapsulater, forms a very hard surface that doesn't chip and is built to go over rusty surfaces. I've used it the frames of old cars. Many times better than Rust0leum.

Maybe a bench grinder with a brass wire wheel and a polishing wheel. When you brass wheel parts, it makes a tiny bit rust resistant and polish even more so. I think that would work well for your couplers and associated parts... And as long as you're going to have the 105 sandblasted, you might as well go all on and get it powder coated...😊

Being a member of a veteran railroad since 50++ years and 16 years being an active member the need for maintenance, repairs, overhaul is well know. Good, regular, maintenance prevents lots of repairs. As for cars, their 1000 mile services... As we move passengers each car, engine, railcar must bee inspected and approved once per year. Steam engine boilers are inspected from the inside, pressure tested, x-rayed...... No mishaps? No, they happen but without consequences so far. One car got a broken spring and listed, and was immediately taken out of service. One loco showed a crack in the wheel and was out of commission. Good work!

So, you didn't want to heat the stake pocket because of the plastic decking, but you'll take a propane torch to a wasp nest laying on said plastic decking. Now that the deck is removed you can heat and straighten that stake pocket.

I see two boxes of Harbor Freight 9 Mil Nitrile work gloves at 7:40... Those things are GREAT!!! Use them for so many things. Painting. Working on the cars. 3D printing... They're so durable. Nice work Aaron... For forming/fixing sheet metal parts, you can't beat picking up some scrap sections of square and round steel bar stock to hammer against. Scrap yards usually have a few bins of off cuts that large shops toss in the scrap bin for recycling. Also... For grinding welds. You can't be the "flapper" sanding disks for the angle grinder. They make axial angle disks and circumferential ones. They're a lot better for a good finish than trying to hack off the weld buggers with a cut off disk.

You could weld a nut to the bottom of the coupler pocket and mill the threads off most of the bolt to create a pin. Then thread the modified bolt in from the bottom of the coupler pocket with lock tight and lock washer. This would eliminate pin through deck.

It's cost effective IF and it's a huge freaking IF. IF you have a club within easy driving distance with track you can use. Where I live a lot big enough to make a circle of track that doesn't pass between the house and the street is going to be well north of a million. And by the time to move far enough away where land is cheap there's no jobs to pay for any hobby. I've started a GP38, but I've yet to manage an invite to track within a days drive of Toronto.
